If you were a superhero what would your superpowers be?
You know that most superheroes have special powers. Spiderman can spin a web. Wonder Woman has incredible strength. Batman and Iron Man – well, they’re super rich, so they can build some really incredible stuff.
As Christians, we know that our God’s power has no limits. He sees all, He knows all, and can do anything. He made the Universe after all. One thing that is so amazing is that His Word is so powerful that just by reading and studying it, it has us check our hearts. Wow! God loves us so much that He has given us the Bible to help us live our lives in such a way that returns that love to Him.
Today's Devotion
Ethan scrolled through the pictures his mother had saved on their computer of when he was very young. He found one where he was dressed in Superman pajamas. A red towel was draped across his shoulders like a superhero cape. He had his hands on his hips, and he gazed in the distance with a raised chin.
The heroic pose, contrasted with his small body, brought a smile to his face. “What in the world was I doing?” he asked his mother.
She peered at the image on the screen. “Your grandmother gave you those pajamas. You said they made you feel like Superman. You went around the house pretending you could see through the walls.”
“See through the walls? You mean, like x-ray vision?”
“That’s right. You said you were looking for crooks trying to take your stuff.” His mother giggled. “You were quite convinced you could see through anything.”
“I wish I could remember that,” Ethan said.
“Yeah, you were quite a handful.” She sighed. “I miss those days. I remember this fairly well. I got a great Sunday School lesson for the class I was teaching out of that experience.”
“A lesson from this?” he asked, pointing at the image on the computer monitor.
“Yes,” she replied. “We all know no one possesses the power to see through walls with their natural eyes. But Jesus sees into our hearts and responds to our hunger to know Him.”
“That is a comforting thought,” Ethan said.
“Plus, the Word of God convicts us. That means it convinces us what is true and holy. It examines our hearts and reveals to us our motives.”
“Like an X-ray at the doctor’s office,” Ethan commented. “That’s where we find true X-ray powers.”
Wrap Up
Hebrews 4:13 says that no creature is hidden from his sight. That verse is not there to frighten us. God is not watching over us to catch us when we make a mistake. No, God is interested in who we are and what we’re doing. Even when we make mistakes, He is faithful to forgive us if we ask.
The writer of Hebrews goes on the describe Jesus’ compassion for humankind. He is touched by our weaknesses. We can come to his throne with boldness, knowing we will find grace and help in our time of need.
Have you been to God’s throne room today? You are always welcome there. No superpowers required. Just a believing heart.
