Focus Verse

Acts 8:18 & 20 “And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money. But Peter said to him, “Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money!”(NKJV)

Jump Start

Say, do you happen to have $4.9 billion I could borrow? I’ll pay it right back. Oh, who am I kidding?

4.9 billon dollars. That is the estimate of how much Buckingham Palace would cost you if it went on sale today. It won’t, but with its 240 bedrooms and elaborate amenities, you’d need a king’s ransom to afford it if it did.

As humans, we are enraptured by wealth and prestige. For most of us, we will never know what it’s like to live in a 240-room palace, fly to the most exotic places on earth, or have billions at our fingertips to spend on whatever we wanted. But the truth is there are just some things that money cannot buy.

Today's Devotion

After school, Matt rode with his father to visit one of his newest customers for his tree trimming business.

When they arrived at the neighborhood, Matt could hardly believe his eyes. The houses were bigger than their church. Expensive cars lined driveways next to neatly manicured lawns.

“Dad, can you believe how big these houses are?” Matt said. “They must be rich.”

“This is the fanciest neighborhood in town,” Dad said. “When the guy who called me told me where he lived, I had to come over right away. Figured he should be good to pay the bill.”

“Wouldn’t it be nice to have all the money we wanted?” Matt leaned against the truck window. “We could buy anything we wanted or go anywhere in the world. You could get on that deer lease you’ve been talking about. We could have a giant pool in our backyard.” Matt let out a long sigh. “I wish we were rich.”

“We are already rich, son.”

“We are?”

“Not with money, but rich with something money cannot buy.”

Matt scratched his head. “How can you be rich without money? Don’t you need it to buy things?”

Dad shook his head. “I’m not talking about this world. I’m talking about heaven. Did you know we already have mansions with our names on them?”

“Oh, yeah. And I bet they’re bigger than these houses,” Matt said.

Dad eased into the circular driveway in front of a palatial residence. “I bet they are too. If I had a choice, I’ll take the mansion in heaven over any of these houses any day.”

Wrap Up

In our theme verses, Simon the sorcerer of Samaria thought he could buy the power that the apostles possessed with a few coins. He soon realized that you can’t buy God’s gifts or His promise of salvation. These are freely given to the humble and repentant.

There’s an old saying that money can’t buy you happiness. I’m not sure about happiness, but I do know that you can’t buy your way into heaven. Why would the Creator want our money when He made all the precious metals and rare gemstones that ever existed? Rather, He wants to exchange the filthy rags of our sinful nature for a robe of righteousness. He wants our hearts.  anything you can do to serve members of your church, your community, or students in your school.
