“Fun. Fast. Tasty. Delicious.”
“Quick eats for busy people.”
"Freaky fast, freaky good."
You may have recognized some of these fast-food restaurant slogans. The appeal of fast food is that you can get your meal quickly without hardly any effort on your part. In today’s fast-paced world, we like our food pre-packaged, pre-sorted, pre-mixed, and pre-cooked. Ready to serve in a matter of minutes. Ain’t nobody got time like in olden days to spend all day in the kitchen.
As humans, this tendency to want things fast and nearly effortlessly extends to other parts of our lives as well. As Christians, if we’re not careful, it can even spill over into our walk with God. While salvation cannot be earned, some lessons God teaches can take a lifetime to get right. We must learn to be patient and endure uncertainties. We must be willing to wait on God and be still in His presence. You just can’t rush righteousness. That said, God has given us everything we need to be successful.
Today's Devotion
“Today, I’m going to show you the right way to smoke ribs,” Zachary’s dad said as he tossed two slabs of ribs onto a cutting board.
Zachary smacked his lips. “I can hardly wait.”
Dad reached into the pantry. “First thing we’re going to need to do is make a homemade dry rub.”
“What’s a rub?”
“It’s a blend of herbs and spices used to coat the ribs,” Dad glanced over the shelves. “Uh oh! Looks like we’re out of garlic powder. And it doesn’t look like we have any cumin either. I’m going to need to go to store before we go any further.”
“Can’t you just do without them?” Zachary pointed at the endless rows of spice bottles. “Look at all the spices you’ve already gotten. Who will miss it?”
His father closed the pantry doors. “Let me ask you a question. Would you bake a cake without flour?”
“Well, no,” Zachary replied.
“How about an omelet without eggs?”
Zachary laughed. “You can’t make an omelet without eggs, Dad.”
“When it comes to my mouth-watering ribs, every spice matters.”
“Why do you mix all those spices up anyway? Wouldn’t it be easier to just buy the rub ready-made from the store?”
“Where’s the fun in that?” Dad said. “But you’ve made me think about something I told a man in church the other day. Even though we have God’s Word, His Spirit, and sound teaching, it doesn’t always come naturally to us how they all work together.
“We don’t come equipped with ready-made righteousness. It’s our job to seek to know the mind and will of God. That comes through a relationship with Him. And on that note, your dad doesn’t do pre-mixed rubs for his famous ribs either.” Dad snatched the keys from the key hanger. “Come along, son, and I’ll show you how a real cook does dry rubs.”
Wrap Up
Many people search their whole lives to find truth and enlightenment. They seek it through religions, self-help books and gurus, and self-indulgence. However, God has already provided everything we need to live a righteous and fulfilling life, but we must be Spirit-led and we must be obedient and patient.
We will never find contentment in ourselves or in anything this world has to offer. We find it in Jesus when we make our relationship with Him our main, life-long priority.
