What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?
In Mark 8, Jesus gathered the people and His disciples and shared with them the price of following after Him. To truly be a disciple of Jesus, the cross we bear must be more precious to us than even our own lives. Jesus went on to ask the question that started this devotion. What will it benefit a man if he gained the whole world but lost his own soul? No minor inconveniences or sacrifices we make on this earth can compare to an eternity with Jesus in heaven.
All too often, we forget just how precious salvation is. Or the price Jesus paid to give us that salvation. We undervalue its worth when we become too preoccupied with other things.
Today's Devotion
“Check out this article.” Karl pointed to the computer screen.
His father scanned the article as Karl gave him a summary. “Some family in New York bought this ceramic bowl at a garage sale for $3. Turned out to be a 1,000-year-old bowl from China that they sold at an auction for $2 million.”
Karl’s eyes got big. “Say, Mom’s always going to garage sales. Maybe this will happen to us.”
Dad chuckled. “Well, you never know. I feel a little bad for the people who sold it, though.”
“Really? Why?” Karl asked. “Sounds like they weren’t smart enough to know what they had before they let it go.”
“That may be true, son. But people let go of things of true value all the time, and don’t even realize it.”
“They do? Like what?”
“For one, their faith. For another, the truth. The Bible says to buy the truth and sell it not. Our salvation cost Jesus His life. Too often, we take it for granted. Or we water it down with a cheap imitation of the true gospel.”
Karl tapped on his Bible at the edge of his desk. “It’s all spelled out in here in black and white. I’m always explaining things about the Bible to my friends.”
“That’s good, son,” his father said. “Keep telling your friends about Jesus. Pray for them. God can open up their understanding and their hearts.”
“Oh, I will,” Karl announced. “I don’t want to make the same mistake as these people did who sold the bowl for three measly dollars. I know what we have is worth more than all the money in the world.”
Wrap Up
In ancient times, bartering was a common practice. Instead of money, people traded goods and services for the things they wanted or needed. For example, one might trade a donkey for grain or linen. Both parties had to agree that the exchange seemed fair and even.
But what is the price of a soul? Is there anything on this earth that compares to its value? Jesus did not think so. In fact, Jesus paid the ultimate price for our salvation. It cost Him His own life.
Never take for granted how precious your walk with God is. There truly is nothing in the world worth giving it up.
