Do you know the song "Be Careful Little Ears What You See? It was a popular song when I was a kid growing up in church. The song also says to be careful little ears what you hear. It’s important to know who to listen to and what to listen to, especially in these last days before Jesus comes back. This is exactly what Paul was pointing to in our verse selection from I Timothy 4:1-16
Today's Devotion
Jennifer raced into her mother’s flower shop, a broad smile painted her rosy face. Her mother stood behind the counter arranging roses into a floral bouquet.
“Hi, Mom! Guess what?” Jennifer said, the words tumbling out of her mouth. “Amy invited me to the Kids Day Celebration at her church this Saturday. They’re going to have devotions and Bar-B-Que, and games and….”
Mom held up a hand. “Whoa! Hold on just a second, sweetie. Who's Amy and what church are we talking about?”
Catching her breath, Jennifer leaned against the counter. “Amy’s a friend I met at school. She just moved here from California. She goes to that church off Hickory Road with that big window in the front.”
Mom’s face grew dark. “Honey, I know that church. They don’t believe that Jesus is God. Only that He was just a good teacher from long ago. I don’t want you going.”
“But Mom,” Jennifer whined, “Why not? It’s not like I’m going to change churches. I just want to go for the games. Did I tell you there’s going to be a carnival too?” Jennifer batted her eyes. “Please, Mommy. Oh Please. Can I go?”
“I’m sorry, honey,” Mom said, shaking her head. “You may not.”
Jennifer’s lower lip began to quiver, and tears formed in her eyes.
Mom wrapped an arm around her shoulder. “Jennifer, it’s not that I don’t want you having fun, it’s just that I don’t want you hearing anything that is not the truth. It’s for the same reason I don’t let you listen to certain music. Do you remember why?”
“Because you don’t want me thinking about the stuff they sing about,” Jennifer mumbled.
“That’s right, baby. The Bible tells us to shun evil and accept God’s truth. But I tell you what. How about you invite Amy over to our house next weekend? We can make it a girls’ day out. We can go shopping, and get ice cream, and maybe even try out that new go-cart park that just opened. How’s that sound?”
Jennifer’s face brightened. “That’s sounds awesome. Thanks, Mom. I’ll ask Amy at school tomorrow.”
Wrap Up
Paul cautioned Timothy about those that would turn from truth and teach lies. He instructed Timothy to hold fast to the faith and follow sound doctrine. We are to do the same.
Now that we know that there are several things God wants us to avoid hearing, what are some things you think God wants us listening to?
