Wouldn’t it be great if life came with an eraser like on a pencil? We could just erase our mistakes and begin again. Well, in a way one exists, and God has it.
As a writer one of my best friends is the undo feature in my word processing program. If I immediately notice that I’ve made a mistake, I can quickly reverse it. Life isn’t so convenient. We can’t go back into our past and remove a wrong. All we can do is to try to make things right with people we’ve wronged, learn from our mistakes to avoid repeating them, and move on.
At least, that’s what is within our power. God has more power. In fact, the blood of Jesus can completely wipe away all our past sins like they never existed. We may have to still deal with the consequences of our bad choices, but in God’s book, He has wiped the slate clean.
Today's Devotion
Caroline rounded the corner into the hallway when she was met with quite a shock. Her baby sister, Mikayla, had drawn stick figures all over the wall with a box of markers. Mikayla had nearly filled the entire wall with her art.
“Mom!” Caroline cried. “You better come quick. Mikayla’s been redecorating!”
Her mother raced from the other end of the house. When she got to the hallway, she grabbed the marker from her daughter’s hand. “No, Sweetie. We don’t color on the walls.”
She turned to Caroline. “Help me pick these up the rest of the markers from the floor then I’m going to take you both to Grandma’s for a couple of hours while I clean this up.”
Caroline raised her eyebrows. “Okay, but I don’t think this is going to come off with soap and water.”
Mother studied the full scope of the damage. “No, I don’t think it will.”
A few hours later, Caroline and her sister were returned home by their grandmother. Their mother just rolled up the painter’s plastic from the floor. Caroline’s jaw dropped when she saw the wall. All the drawings were completely gone.
“It’s amazing what a few coats of paint will do, right?” Mom said.
“I can’t even tell there were any drawings. It’s like it never happened,” Caroline said.
Wrap Up
When we say that Jesus has erased our past mistakes this means that He has forgiven us. 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” And with the help of the Holy Spirit, we can keep from repeating these mistakes.
A clean slate and power to overcome temptations. That’s a pretty good deal. But it’s important to remember that God can’t forgive what we don’t confess. Trust His mercies. He wants to make you clean.
